So far, 2012 has been met with dead air on the NCFA blog. And I think that is absolutely no good. I hope that everyone believes in Valentine's Day Resolutions because the blog silence is going to end.

I am re-purposing and re-vamping the blog. This will now become the epicenter for all of the NCFA social media sites. You will be able to find links to all of the news articles that I post on Facebook and Twitter, you will be able to see synopses of the weekly articles I write on the NCFA's blog page, and you will be able to get the latest NCFA news, discount information, and schedule updates. I will also update the site with class photos, student questions, videos, and other fun stuff.

So in the spirit of Valentines Day and in an effort to make amends for being MIA, here is a clip from the most romantic movie of all time. Enjoy...

Press Release- Internet Classes to Begin January 2012!

Largo, Florida, November 23, 2011 - HTCI has developed online classes that will focus on bringing our hands on experience into a cyber setting. Students will receive the same hands on support that has made HTCI a global leader in law enforcement education, but from the comfort of their own departments.

Students can register now for the first Digital Triage Forensics class beginning January 3rd. This course follows Stephen Pearson and Richard Watson's book, "Digital Triage Forensics", and teaches students the DTF model to process Digital Media. Investigators will learn how to use the DTF concept to reduce their forensics/analysis workloads and how it can be used (if trained correctly) to lighten the workload. Upon completion of the class, students will be able to incorporate what they learned into their department's model and get information from electronic media without having to wait months to get results back from the labs.

Later in the year, students will have an opportunity to take more online courses on a variety of topics. Classes will include “Secure View 2”, “KaseManager Application”, and “Email Investigations”. Students will also be able to renew their CCST certifications online. There are no prerequisites for these classes and they are recommended for both law enforcement and military.

NCFA Announces Sean Morrisey to Instruct January iPhone Class!

The NCFA is proud to welcome Sean Morrissey, CEO of Katana Forensics, Inc. and creator of Lantern as the instructor for our January iPhone Investigations course. Mr. Morrisey has both military and law enforcement background, and is author of “iOS Forensic Analysis” and Lead Author of “Mac OS X, iPod and iPhone Forensic Analysis”.

This course will give the student the foundation necessary to conduct analysis of any Apple Mobile Devices. It will cover the iOS architecture to include hardware and operating system. From incident response to completing the exam, the student will manually and with the aid of the automated tools Lantern 2.0 and Lantern Lite, parse and report artifacts.

HTCI, the NCFA's parent company, is in the process of developing new online classes! These classes will focus on bringing our hands on experience into a cyber setting. Students will still receive the same instructor support, but can take the class from the comfort of their homes.

ADF Solutions- Digital Forensic Triage Webinar

Today, I had the pleasure of attending our partner ADF Solutions' webinar on their Digital Forensic Triage software. Now, I'm not a technologically inclined person (I have an English degree), but I was really impressed.

First, I could use it. It took me a week to figure out blogger, so if it seemed easy to me, anyone could use it. Second, it saves time. The triage tool allows you to move quickly through your computer backlog, flag computers that need a full forensic workup, and eliminate computers that do not need to be examined further. You can triage multiple computers at the same time, so you can easily work multiple seizure cases. It allows investigators to quickly identify suspects in child exploitation cases or a threat to national security. The software is designed to be used both in the lab and in the field, so it is flexible based on the department's needs.

Who doesn't remember those painfully boring lectures in high school where the teacher would stand up in front of the class and talk at you. They may have read from a book, wrote on the chalk board, or read their slapped together Power Point presentations. Each class would take an eternity and you're mind would be on anything and everything BUT what the teacher was saying.

Who ever liked being in those classes? And did anyone actually learn anything in them? Yes, those were rhetorical questions. That's why people love movies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Now to my point.

One of the things I hear most when I talk to previous students is how great the "hands on" training is. So many companies these days are cutting corners with training, by making it all online or hiring instructors to simply read Power Points. Now this all has its place, but if you are learning how to do in depth investigations of criminal behavior, you probably want someone showing you step by step how to do something. Also, everyone has a strong technology background, so it's good to have someone there who has done what your learning to do, and has used it for its intended purpose.

All of our instructors have "in the field" experience with most being retired military and law enforcement. Every class is 100% hands on so you will be practicing and mastering the skills you learn about.

Class Spotlight: EDAS Computer Forensic Boot Camp

With out next Boot Camp coming up next week, I thought I'd take a few minutes to highlight just how awesome this class is. When people throw out the name "boot camp", I always think of an intense workout or something where I'm going to be pushed to the limit. Well you might not break a sweat during our Boot Camp, but you definitely will be pushed to the limit.

This class combines our Computer Crime Essentials and Forensic Processing of Digital Media classes into one 5 day class. It's designed so by the end of class, you will know how to conduct an investigation involving a computer from start to finish. Upon successful completion of the exam, you will also become certified as a Computer Crime Scene Examiner. What's great about this class, is you don't have to be a computer expert to take it. The NCFA does all of our training with a hands on approach. Our instructors don't just stand up there and tell you how to do this, they will walk you through how to do it step by step.

Something that our Boot Camp gives you that others don't, is all of the tools you will need to conduct these investigations. We include our EDAS Deployable System which is everything you need. We also provide hotel, breakfast, and lunch. Not to mention, we're located on Florida's Gulf Beaches, so you can explore when training is over.
